Life in the Boarding house
Lusaka Health Institute is a registered nursing school offering diploma courses in nursing. It is located in the eastern side of town within the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka.
In January 2007 the school had 40 students and among them 9 where able to be accommodated in the boarding house. This is a small place with a few rooms, kitchen and bathrooms, adjacent to the school building. By January 2008 the number of students in the boarding house had increased to about 28 and the school had to find a rented house next to the school. Later within the same year, they were moved to another house which was at least better than the former house.
To run this, the students have to contribute 250,000 Zambia Kwacha (equivalent to 35 euro a month) to help in these rentals.
At the moment, the school has about 40 female students in the boarding houses and about 60 are day scholars. No male student at the moment is accommodated by the school because the facility is limited.
The boarding house needs seats for the lounge where students can attend their visitors and relax from outside study hours. There is a need for locked cupboards and lockers for safe keeping of their items as we once had thieves at our premises who stole items.
The student house needs at least 2 big 4 plate stove and an upright fridge that can be used together with the deep-freezer, which is there now, thanks to the good donations we already got from the Netherlands, at the moment to keep our stuff cool. Unfortunately, the one stove that is there at the moment is old and can not accommodate the number of people in the big boarding house.
In conclusion, we can say, life in the boarding house is good because students living like a family and also are able to do school work together through discussions even at night. But they are still hoping for a better life if things that are missing are put in place.
