This project is the identification and initiative of the target youth with whom we work. The youth have taken active lead and role in the identification, planning of the project and will also continue to be active during the implementation
In 2008-2009, Community Partnership teamed with Sanne Peters, a Dutch volunteer from NorGhavo to develop and apply a system and impact evaluation of our After-School activities on children in and out of school in the Northern region of Ghana. The reports high lighted the challenges of the need for more sustainable resource base for the continued service delivery and the institution of a process that would involve diverse and widespread community participation in addressing issues affecting youth.
Our interaction with youth clubs in the Northern region and secondary data reveals that Ghanaian youth especially rural youth have extremely limited opportunities for education, employment, and participation in constructive political and development processes. There are rarely coordinated efforts and opportunities (system of parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces that are attractive, safe, functional, and available to all children and youth population) that will meet the diverse leisure needs of youth society and that of the community. Services and programs that offer positive opportunities for self discovery, personal agenda development and building healthy productive lives are if not non- existing but very much limited.
Also As part of the youth need assessment process , CPYWD and YSI team, during their 2009 project visit to Ghana interacted with various individual and groups on youth development with regards to tolerance(political, religious, social and gender), democracy, inter-religious dialogue in separate meetings

CPYWD interact with youth at their communities’ level weekly while CPYWD/YSI has yearly joint interaction with local and international youth. Certain important recommendations were derived. Among these are:
1. Encouraging the establishment of Youth Centres and parks to serve as rallying points for youth activities in the communities
2. Partnership and Collaboration for Inter-religious Service for development
3. Strengthening Linkages- between education and training and the world of work
4. Promotion of Sporting and Recreational Activities
5. Designing multi-sectoral and Integrated youth development projects

We want to execute this project to enhance sustainable youth self discovery, personal agenda development and building healthy productive lives, capacity/competence and participation in leadership and local governance, reduce youth unemployment in the long term, increase access to and use of basic developmental information and services and ensure that Ghana’s youth and children (its future youth) in the Northern region. The recreational parks will complement the services of the library/Information Communication center to ensure these.

Project doelstellingen

What do you want to achieve with this project on the short term and in the long run?
The long term goal of the project is to enhance the quality of life of young people in the Northern region of Ghana by providing services and programs that offer positive opportunities for self discovery, personal agenda development and building healthy productive lives through:
1. Create a permanent opportunity for physical, intellectual, emotional, social and leadership skill development leading. to youth education and social change
2. Creating environments and opportunities within the Discovery center to meet the diverse leisure/recreational needs of youth society, promoting their capacity/competence and participation in leadership and local governance, reduce youth unemployment/poverty and that of the community

Project doelgroep(en)

The target group of this project is young people of the age from 7 to 24 years, as well as adults from 25 to 35 years with different ethnic, religious, social, economic and tribal backgrounds. Over 500 youth from six communities will have direct benefit daily while over 35,000 youth all over the Northern Region of Ghana will benefit from this project indirectly. The centre will be grounds for forum, seminars, workshops and Inter-religious dialogue. Community volunteer Facilitators will use the centre for in-service/refresher training.

Op welke manier draagt het project bij aan het oplossen van armoede?

The project when executed will put target group in a better position to discover themselves, be confident enough to take income generating initiatives for themselves. Also their engaging in the recreational and sports activities will build in youth team spirit for partnership and cooperation for the business world. They will gain the skills/spirit of risk taking which is a basic ingredient for entrepreneurship. This in all will put youth in the forefront in the fight against poverty.

Duurzaamheid

Community Partnership together with the progressive youth groups with whom we have been working since 2007 would be responsible for the project. Youth leaders and community parents committees and school management committees have been educated and would be given some training to support the running of project to ensure that the required services are offered to the right people at the right time.

What are the possible risks for the project and have you already thought of possible solutions to manage these risks?
The possible risk for the project is the increase in the prices of items needed. We have taken care of this by making a 5% upward adjustment in the budget. The falling nature of the local currency(cedi) against the euro will also make up for the rises in prices

How are you going to finance the running costs of the project?
The running cost of the project would be raised locally by CPYWD and the target youth groups. Also the Ghana Education Service through the National youth Employment programme and the Regional youth council will support the running of the facility by given free operational service to the center. Since the 2007 CPYWD is already lobbying and creating a partnership with the Ghana Education Service. The activities of CPYWD are supporting the Government efforts. Therefore it is expected that they will support structurally in kind and cash.
Further more small fees to be charged for certain services to be provided by the center. For example quarterly sports festival, ceremonial games during the celebration of our traditional festival. Fees would be taken from other organizations who would intend to use the conference hall for meetings. Activity/project proposal would be written to source funding so the cost of facility use would be factored into it.
At last in the full project proposal the budget and plan of creating a Youth Hostel and service for volunteers and tourist is also implemented. This investment will create structural income generating in order to cover the running costs of the project.
At this moment we are working on a business plan, which will be presented within 6 months. In this plan all will be explained in detail.

Create an opportunity for youth physical, intellectual, emotional, social and leadership skill development in their neighborhood by the end of 2011 through:
Strategies for objective
1. Provision of a multi purpose system parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces that are attractive, safe, functional, and available to all segments of the population especially children and youth (with various out door and indoor sporting facilities -football, volley ball, Basket ball, Table tennis, play equipment for kids) by end of January 2011
2. Creation of open space shed (summer huts) and reflection gardens decorated with tree and garden/flower plant by (2011-2012)

Verwachte eindresultaten

The specific results(outputs) of the project when completed would include:
- Over 500 young people from the rural communities of Tamale metropolis, Tolon/ kumbungu districts have access to sports and recreational facilities including one football field of standard size fitted with metal goal post with net provided for community youth
- Youth gain access to and are introduced to alternatives sports (volley ball, Basket ball, Table tennis) aside soccer the only sports commonly available to them.
- Open spaces and sheds conducive, attractive and safe for individual reflection and group meeting created within the resource center
- Two sets of kids play equipment (swing, slide, seasaw, wooden playhouse, and merry go round installed for kids(5 to 10 years old group)
The achievement of the above output means that the target you would have the opportunity to:
- Develop personal relationship and teamwork skill/ spirit
- Develop for youth physical, intellectual, emotional, social and leadership skills
- Intercommunity relationship and communal spirit would be encouraged among youth promoting youth volunteerism and services
- The facility will serve as a meeting point for our ‘progressive youth clubs’ within the region. The clubs will promote various activities that will foster independence, self-empowerment and sense of community-care, promoting grassroots level partnership for development amongst the youth of the surrounding districts and communities.
- Neighborhood schools will have the opportunity to use facility for school/educational sports and recreation center.
-Male and female gender groups will have opportunity to play together thereby promoting gender equality and women empowerment

No funding has been received in Ghana yet regarding this project. However in the Netherlands the following amount is available for the total project:
- €4.000, YSI funding (door to door selling and fund raising activities like organizing dinners)
- €200,- Soroptimisten: confirmed but not yet received
These sources have not yet been sent to Ghana in expectation of approval of Impulsis funding. If they will finance the project, the raised funds need to be sent to their account. Further more they will double it.
