Tajikistan was and remains the poorest country of the Central Asian republics and one of the poorest countries in the world. In recent years the number of injecting drug users in the country increased significantly, estimates speak of 30,000 to 35,000. This growth will probably continue: mainly because of Tajikistan's location along the main trafficking route from Afghanistan to Western Europe.

To ensure a network of essential public health services in the province of Gorno-Badakhshanskaya (GBAO), AFEW started in July 2006 the Pamir against AIDS Project: HIV prevention and care in GBAO. This first project ended in July 2009, but AFEW was allowed to continue its activities for another three years to expand.

By strengthening the local capacity of health care in the region of GBAO, the Pamir against AIDS Project worked on the fight against HIV among risk groups (injecting drug users and vulnerable women like sex workers) and supported people living with HIV. The goal is for all reach all layers of society with friendly care, prevention, treatment and support.
Current activities: 2009 – 2012
In this second phase of activities, they are increasing the focus on HIV prevention and sexual health education among women.
By concentrating efforts on women, the project aims to prevent the further feminization of the HIV epidemic in this region. While most HIV cases are still identified among men, there is an emerging growth in the number of cases reported among women. The risk factors for a female HIV epidemic are high in this region: mass labour migration (women can be exposed to the risk of contracting HIV from husbands who have spent long periods abroad), meanwhile gender inequalities mean low access to sexual health education for women, negative attitudes towards condoms and the perpetuation of myths about HIV.

Activities are:
• Conducting public events and distribute new informational materials to increase awareness about the vulnerability of women to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and prevention methods, along with local women's organizations.
• Training representatives of women’s organisations on project management, advocacy, sexual health issues and fundraising, as well as ensuring their participation in national and international conferences, workshops and councils.

AFEW has helped several women NGOs in the process. One of which is, NGO "Khairandesh" which set up a women's support centre in Ishkoshim. This women's support centre supports women who are deserted or are abused by their husbands. It also helps women who have been infected with the HIV virus and disowned by their families. The centre offers training courses for women to learn a profession, for instance sewing classes and computer courses. To meet the demand for these courses, the centre needs sewing machines and computers.

Project doelstellingen

Improving the position of women in Ishkoshim, in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, (on the border with Afghanistan), by supporting the women’s support centres.
The centre offers courses to enable the women to provide for themselves. The women are taught to make clothes and work with computers.

Project doelgroep(en)

The project is targets to train 4 times a year a group of 40 Women who are abused or abandoned by their husbands. The center offers courses to the women themselves in their maintenance to be provided. The women are taught to make clothes and work with computers. Thus, 160 women per year are trained and get the opportunity to earn their own livelihood. The project is expected to run for 3 years, and will train t 480 women, causing an estimation of more than 1000 women and children benefiting of independence.

Duurzaamheid

The sewing machines and computers will be owned by the organization. Staff of the organization will receive training and then will give training and guidance to the women in the centr. A course (both the computer and the sewing course) lasts 2 months and will take place 4 times per year. Thus, 160 women per year are trained and an opportunity to earn their own livelihood.

We hope to receive the amount of money to purchase both the computers and sewing machines by this summer 2012. Also the training of 10 staff should take place so then the courses can start in summer 2012. .

Verwachte eindresultaten

4 times a year, 20 women received sewing machine classes and 20 others are taught on how to use a computer.
