There are many orphan children in very poor families in India who otherwise go for begging or in crime. Mrs. Ine Buma, citizen of Netherlands when came to Bodhgaya for a visit to this International Tourist Place, she found such children, half naked, very dirty clothes and begging and sleeping on street. Her kind heart got melted and she determined to help such children and conceptualized LBHC. She collected some money from her family and friends in The Netherlands and asked NBJK close to Bodhgaya to help them in running and managing the LBHC.

NBJK put its full effort in realizing the dream for a best future of these orphan children. LBHC is run and managed by NBJK with the support of Stitchting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya. But there are lots of needs of a child for developing her/his full potential and balanced growth. It is not possible for a person or group of person to meet these needs alone, hence we are applying for some of the essential needs to be fulfilled for those children in their development.

At present, there are 43 orphan and helpless children living in LBHC. 7 more children will soon join the LBHC. It is planned to keep 60 poor orphan children in LBHC. The notification procedure for the orphan children is as follows: 1. Age should be 0-5 years. 2. No father/mother 3. If mother, should have no earning ability. There are no children with special needs in Lord Buddha Home for Children. The land on which the cottages are built is owned. Group of 10 children are looked after by a “Mother” in one cottage – which has 3 rooms, dinning hall, toilets etc. The mother is chosen on the following criteria: 1. She should be single woman/widow. 2. She should have no children 3. Extremely poor. There are 5 cottages fully developed and sixth cottage/house is under development and furnishing. “Mothers” take care just like own mother and send those children in the best English

Medium public school in Gaya. There is a community hall where the children study and play (indoor) after school hours. There is also a small play ground. The project has been conceptualized on the basis of the essential requirement of those children, which they ask for full development. The urgent requirement is furniture, washing machine, TV and utensils for 6th children house so that we can accommodate another group of 10 orphan poor children. The TV will be seen by all the 60 children. There is not a single TV in the campus in any of the house and children always demand for a TV so that they can see cartoon films, have news, songs and get other useful entertainment program. By using DVD and DVD-CD we can also show them educational films on health, general knowledge, children’s good films, can play games and have visual course materials. SKB provides us for the expenditure and running costs for the fooding, clothing, education materials, uniforms, school fees of the children and office expenses. The amount given by SKB was Rs. 3 lakhs/quarter (€ 4545) for 40 children earlier but from Jan, 2010 it is Rs. 5.5 lakhs/quarter (€ 8333) for 50 children.

Government is aware about our project but they are not involved. Till date we are unable to mobilize any fund from the government as we need to register with the government to seek their support which is itself a very lengthy process. We will start the procedure for registration very soon.

Holistic development of poor orphan children- with healthy body, sound mind, highest education deserved and humanistic values in a motherly care and child-friendly environment.

Project doelgroep(en)

Overall this project will benefit 60 orphan children (30 girls & 30 boys) of the LORD BUDHHA HOME FOR CHILDREN, Bodhgaya. These children are from 3.5 years to 12 years presently. The boys will be accommodated separately after 18 years or will be sent to hostel of the college and will be supported till they get employed and independent. As per Indian culture, the girls will treat LBHC as their own home and will come to meet the small brothers and children and the “Mothers” even after marriage and settled with their husbands. The direct benefit will be availed by 10 orphan children who will reside in the 6th House for LBHC and one mother who will take care of these children.

Op welke manier draagt het project bij aan het oplossen van armoede?

The orphan children of very poor parents are most deprived section of the community. If not supported, they remain illiterate, under-developed, do begging or get involved in some crime. This project is partially supporting those poor ill-fated children who have lost their mother & father in making their future better, thus directly contributing in poverty alleviation.

Duurzaamheid

The project is sustainable as the provided furniture, washing machine, TV-DVD and utensils will last for 50 years and above.
NBJK will be overall responsible for the project in the long run.
There is no risk as such in the project as it all is hardware activities. There is risk of fire but for that required care is taken by the Mothers and there is insurance of the assets.
The running cost is being provided by Stichting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya- The Netherlands.
We also raise some money by hiring guest house to foreign visitors but the guest houses brings in only 2%-3% of the recurring cost as the guest house is situated in very remote area and hence there are very few visitors to this place.
Till date we have not been able to become independent of funding. The children residing in LBHC belong to the age group of 4-13 years at present. Hence, they have not been taught any income generation activity but we will definitely incorporate this in future. LBHC is established on 4th Nov. 2004 hence there are no children who have left LBHC till date.

After the grant got received the following steps will be taken-
1. The utensils, furniture, TV-DVD and washing machine as per the list enclosed will be purchased and transported to the 6th house
2. They will be maintained from the running cost we get from Stichting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya.

All these activities will be completed in the first quarter after the receipt of the grant

Verwachte eindresultaten

The utensils, washing machine and furniture in the sixth house will help in bringing and living comfortably another batch of 10 poor orphan children and mother in LBHC. The TV and DVD will help all the children of LBHC to see cartoon films, educational films, other TV program and entertainments. Every item is for the target group i.e. for the orphan children and will be all utilized by them for long term.

We have not applied any where for the above items. The Stichting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya provides support for the running cost and construction of the building. We are enclosing the grants received by NBJK in last 4 years for ready reference. The annual report and Audit Reports (financial statements) are also pasted in our web site www.nbjk.org.
