Projectbeschrijving
More students living in a room at the University campus of Yaoundé 1 have developed excessive wasting of water and electricity’s resources in their room every day. Often they open water faucets and let lights on during the whole day just because they know that the costs are not supported by them but by the University authorities and the price of the rent that is very insignificant also include invoices of water and electricity monthly. Even if some rooms have their water and electricity infrastructures spoilt, more students are adopting these kind of behaviors consciously. We remembered that sometimes we have adopted the same attitude many times but unconsciously and also seen many times flooding in several rooms of the campus because a student had opened a faucet all the day without scruple. Therefore, the University authorities have to pay biggest water and electricity bills and face to a higher risk of destruction of rooms and others infrastructures because of repeated flooding and fires.
Working to empower young people and children to become green in their daily activities, it is very difficult for us to see that kind of attitudes, and don’t take action to tackle it sounds bad. That’s why we think that it is our duty to sensitize our peers at the University campus about the necessity to adopt responsible and green attitudes for the urgent economy of water and electricity resources in their rooms so that they can contribute to save natural resources in their community and also for the whole planet.
The project is a call to action to bring students to become green through green attitudes and habits. It will be run during the whole 2010-2011academic year to September 2010 from June 2011 and will see its achievements be celebrate during the 2011 World Environment Day within the hosting University. The objectives will be reach through a green campaign inside the campus aiming to sensitize and educate the whole University community especially the campus inhabitants. The project activities will consists on mobilization of University officials and students around the green campaign, the advertisement of educative materials like posters, drawings, photos and our voices to share our message, sensitize and educate students with creative slogans, three main training sessions and educative talks for students living in the University campus, a door by door sensitization and discussions focused on sustainable development and green economy inside the campus, a door by door reparation of water and electricity spoilt materials in the University campus rooms, the creation of ten green spaces inside the University with public awareness messages for sensitization, a trees planting during the 2011 Earth Day celebration follow by the launching of the University Best Green Leaders Contest. They will also be organize several clean up activities inside the campus and around all the campus’ building. All these activities will be run by our organization and also with youth volunteers, University officials and members of the University clubs focused on sustainable development and environmental education. This will make students aware about the dramatic relation between that kind of behaviors adopted by them and climate change responsible of deterioration of our natural resources like and which is contributing to the lack of water access in several regions around Cameroon and the world. The campaign will make them conscious about their ability to become responsible citizens who can contribute to the development of their country by adopting eco-citizenship attitudes in their daily activities for the safeguard of our planet !

Op welke manier draagt het project bij aan het oplossen van armoede?
The access of essential services is very difficult to ensure in our country. To really cover the human needs and to contribute to give them better living conditions will be more difficult in the future than now. The level of poverty is raised so that people don't have possibility to eat every day and get access to a good drinking water. Thousands of people don't have what to eat and drink and the lack of social infrastructure doesn't allow them to receive in their houses essential services and first products required as water, domestic energy, food and primary education. In another way we have a very big problem with human settlements and more people are without shelters or live in the street.
This is why our Government has decided to offer underpaid lodgings to poor people and especially to students attended school at university. Unfortunately even if more people are affected by the lack of settlement and access to good water, more of these students adopt bad practices by wasting water and electricity resources in their rooms at the university campus and also by destroying these social infrastructures without scruple. As university campus inhabitant we experienced sometimes this situation while knowing that in another place at the same time people of our family or another family are in the need because they don’t have access to human settlement and good water. It is for that reason we sincerely think that we have to act now with our peers to encourage others to live green lives, educate them about issues impacting people around the world and bring them become more efficient in their use of social infrastructures and natural resources with the impact on the global environment.
Duurzaamheid
The project is sustainable through its implementation with the main target group: University students living in the campus and the University officials. By involving them we will make them as main actors of the project so that during their entire stay at the campus they will continue with green habits, caring green spaces, share our green message to their campus mates and also other students coming newly in the campus as inhabitants. We will work with these target groups during the worldwide events and celebration in relation with environment and sustainable development so that during these events we can re empower our messages.
During the project we will work on 'doing' rather than 'asking' for change. It means that to ensure that after the project people will continue with green actions we will share specific messages supporting by real examples to show them the necessity to live green now and after. We will present to them the impact in all the aspects affecting by that kind of attitudes (health, economy, food, energy, natural resources...) This will make them feel responsible for their behavior and decide to adopt positive change.
We will work on changing attitudes for a better world with students as actors for change and the impact of global sensitization of other students newly comers or families members. This will help to sustain the campaign generation of students after generation. In order to sustain financially the project we will ask at the beginning to the hosting University to ensure and support it with future funds so that it can become a continuing activity without many funds raised firstly. The University authorities support will play a great role here through these sustainable funds aiming to renew the project's activities and materials. In other hand the University clubs working on environment will be able to organize fundraising activities within the University so support the campaign. This plan will bring support to the project for the coming campaigns. For that we will include fundraising skills in the training curriculum.
