We would like to Create a computer classroom in the Alryami Academy so that the students from the last 2 classes (form 4 and 5) can have a real computer course, teaching them everything from general computer knowledge to internet use to the basic packages like Microsoft office and Photoshop. After having finished the course, some of the students can be selected for the Zanzibits and Zanzicode trainings, after they have finished their education with Al Riyami Academy.

The classes would be every day, with a maximum of 12 youths per class (we would buy 12 new computers, with flat screen and all). The computer classes will be an integral part of the curriculum which is given at Al Riyami academy, which is also good for the promotion of the Academy. The teacher salaries will of course be paid by Zanzibtis.

Within this particular project proposal we request for 6 computers for the center.

Project doelstellingen

The goals of the project are to teach poor youth, starting at a younger age, how to work with computers, the workings of the generally needed software packages, internet, email and the philosophy behind digital communication. This way, they will have a better chance of finding a job after finishing their secondary school, or have an increased chance of getting a possibility to study further.

Our aim it so select at least two students per year from the Alriyami Bits project to join our Zanzibits film and multimedia course.

Project doelgroep(en)

The target group is Alryami Academy students from form 4 and 5. This consists of about 40 students, I think (do you know how much there are exactly). We will also be giving short introductory courses to form 2 and 3, which consists of about 35 students (how much is this exactly). If the pilot year is deemed a success, we will see if students from an even younger age would be able to follow some sort of course.

Op welke manier draagt het project bij aan het oplossen van armoede?

We teach youths how to work with computers, and seeing that this knowledge on Zanzibar is very much in demand, youngsters how have basic computer skills get a job much quicker than youths who do not possess these skills.

Duurzaamheid

Part of the Al Riyami project is to act towards this sustainability for Zanzibits. Once the training room is operational, Zanzibits, together with Al Riyami Bits, will start offering private computer courses in the evening hours and of Saturdays. Since Zanzibits has grown in name and fame on the island, we have had increasing demand for trainings, which we have always rejected, because of the lack of facilities. By using the new facilities, we can accommodate rising demand from the private sector, and generate a form of income in the process. This is the possibility for the ‘IT floor’ to become more famous, especially with Zanzibits and Zanzicode already there.

1st of April – secure the funding and start buying materials and installing facilities
1st of May – Start with the pilot course, given by Zanzibits trainers. The courses will last until the end of December.
15th of December – evaluation of the results
1st of January 2011 – start of new coursed for new students of the Alriyami Academy

Verwachte eindresultaten

We expect the following results:
- successfully give computer training to 75 underprivileged secondary school students
- select two of the Alriyami Bits students to join the Zanzibits film and multimedia course after completion of their secondary school classes
- assist the Alriyami Academy with their computer and internet related issues, so that the academy may become, in the future, a place where digital communication and classes will become something for all students, starting at an even younger age, like it is in Europe.
